Name: Eren Jaeger
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Canon: Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan
Timeline: I’m taking him from after the end of the fight with the female type titan, before they meet the people from the fight of castle Utgard.
Background:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Titan and http://shingekinokyojin.wikia.com/wiki/Eren_Jaeger
Personality:
One of Eren’s most outstanding character traits is the irrepressible determination that keeps him going no matter what. While various characters describe it differently (those with less fighting experience tend to find him tenacious while experienced fighters like Rivaille took a look into his eyes and went “yep, that’s a real monster”) most end their assessment with the note that they find this streak of him to be either scary or dangerous. (The kind of danger he poses can be debated on - Jean thinks he’ll do something stupid that will get himself and others killed, the veterans from the scouting legion see it as an unpredictable and tameable force to be reckoned with.) When there is a choice between giving into despair and going down fighting Eren always chooses to fight, over and over, no matter if he has a chance to win to begin with or not or if what he has to face is the terror of the titans, friends turned traitors or a horrible truth about himself. The same kind of determination also helped him to work his way up into graduating as the 5ft best of the trainee squad even though he possesses no outstanding talents (besides hand-to-hand combat, which is pointedly useless if you’re going up against opponents who are twice to five times as large as you and don’t feel pain).
Besides determined, Eren is also reckless, impulsive, violent and optimistic with a touch of idealism. He holds fast on his belief that all the fighting and suffering will pay off and that one day humanity will be free of the walls and the threat of the titans again. At the same time Eren has no illusions about how the real world works. He knows that hard work doesn’t always pays off, how bad their chances are (it takes usually about 30 human casualties to bring down a single titan - if everything goes well!) and that death in his line of work as a soldier is quick, dirty and plenty. Back in his training days even Eren himself would admit that his wish to join the scouting legion is pretty crazy, nicely put (the rest of his trainee squad called it ‘suicidal’), and he reacts with shock when he finds out that his friends want to join it together with him, even when he is secretly also happy about it. He also takes the nickname the rest of the trainee squad gave him (Mr. Death Drive and other variations of he-who-is-in-a-haste-to-die) in stride.
Eren has a way with words and actions that speak louder than them that gives him a talent of reaching people that he himself is blind to (he’s pretty dense in that regard). A good example of this is friendship with Annie, the cynic ultra-loner of the trainee squad. The secret to Eren’s way of making bonds is that while he is hot-tempered, stubborn and impulsive, he also knows how to listen to other people and their reasons and how to re-evaluate himself according to that.
For instance, he hates people who are complacent with the frail status quo they are living in way more than people who might have reasons for their actions that he might not find good. This is because Eren can understand that different people will have different ways of seeing things just as they also have different kinds of strength, even if he might not like it. This caused him to regularly butt heads with Jean who wanted to join the military police in order to live a safe and easy life, but to have no problems with accepting Annie’s and Berthold’s reasons for doing the same when they straight out told him that they wanted to do it because they were egoistic or scared of the titans.
All those qualities accumulate into a personality that makes Eren a real game changer, as his insistence to keep moving forward and fighting regularly inspires others to do the same and creates bonds that he himself is not aware of as he pulls them along with him and puts his trust into them.
Eren doesn’t make friends easily, though. As a kid he only ever had two friends, Mikasa and Armin, and his father would tease him at times for his attitude that prevented him from getting more. Said attitude didn’t get better when Eren survived the massacre that followed the fall of Wall Maria. While Eren wishes to have people whom he can trust and stay with, he is secretly not good at letting anybody close to him; when he trusts people he usually does so silently (like Armin, whom he only told that he has always relied on him to make the right decisions/come up with a good plan when things went south after his friend had a serious case of doubting his worth) and he may even end up pushing them away like he sometimes does with Mikasa whenever he feels that her attachment and ‘mothering’ to him becomes too much.
The best way to befriend Eren is to show that you are putting your trust into him, something that he has grown not to expect on a personal level, thanks to his temper and beliefs that clash with most (as well as a certain other thing). The other members of Rivaille’s squad once basically get him to go along with a plan he doesn’t know and to tolerate the continued death of people who tried to protect them with the sentence “We’re trusting you. You can do what you want, but... Won’t you trust us?” This comes back to royally bite him in the ass and teach him a painful lesson about responsibility and making choices when said squad comrades die shortly later while trying to give him a chance to escape.
This might make Eren sound nicer than he is, though.
While Eren generally fights for humanity and hates to see people die when it could be prevented he is everything but a shining hero. Deep down his motives are highly egotistical: as a kid Eren wanted to see and understand the world outside the walls and resented the way humans lived inside its protection “like cattle, waiting to be picked” as he put it. Second to his desire to be free comes his immense thirst for revenge against the titans, both for what they did to his home and family and for what they did to humanity as a whole. This desire expresses itself in his desire to join the Scouting Legion who goes outside the wall and fights the titans directly, but also in the way he talks about them. (His trademark saying is that he wants to kill them all until the very last.) A good example for how these things combine is when Eren berates Mikasa for putting her own emotions above the survival of the human race when she wanted to stay by his side and protect him during the battle of Trost rather than to join the best fighters at the back where they were protecting the civilians. While this sounds noble it quickly becomes clear that Eren did it because he didn’t want the titans to get away with what they wanted (eat everybody) rather than him wanting to save people (albeit he considered that very important too).
In a similar vein Eren is quick to make harsh judgements about people (it took him a whole one and a half day to decide that everybody in the scouting legion is either maladjusted or an oddball) and resorts to (sometimes extreme) violence easily. The best example for the latter is when he killed two of the human traffickers who murdered Mikasa’s family and abducted her in cold blood. He also encouraged her to fight for her life and kill the third (who was currently strangling him) all at age 9. Back then his reason for doing that rather than to wait for the police reinforcement his father was getting was that he had wanted to save Mikasa as quickly as possible, and that he didn’t consider the slave hunters humans anymore, but just beasts in human clothes that needed to be put down.
Why is your character a good fit for the setting of Soul Campaign, and what will they do once they are in the game?
The first thing that Eren will do upon arriving will probably be trying to recover from the brainfry a world without walls where the human race is still plenty will cause him. That said, he is an excellent soldier (when he doesn’t get himself left hanging somewhere to dry, tangled in his 3d Maneuver Gear & upside down) who has spent years training himself at how to confront and kill monsters under odds that are even worse than those that Shibusen is having against the witches. Eren’s main objective for fighting isn’t to save humans, but he also won’t stay and watch while they are being hurt as long as he can help it, so expect him to be on the front lines and cause chaos of one sort or another until all the monsters are gone!
List the abilities your character will still have in Soul Campaign:
*Physical abilities:
Eren will keep his training and skills that he has gained as a soldier. This includes extensive training in martial arts (with a big thanks to Reiner and Berthold), self-defense (Annie taught it to him after he showed interest in her unusual fighting methods whether he wanted or not) and horse-back riding. After three years of training not to end up hanging upside down he is also rather skilled at using the 3D maneuver gear.
*Mental Abilities:
One of the things that’s really worth noting about Eren is how he keeps from letting himself be broken by all the things that happen to him, usually with the worst timing possible. Example? The moment he starts thinking that those 3 years of military training have paid off, that humanity has somewhat recovered and that he and his newfound friends will go out and kick those titans butts? Tiny Mc60Meter reappears right behind him and kicks a hole in the wall again, which starts a bloody retake on how Eren’s hometown was lost three years ago.
His refusal to give up makes Eren a force to be reckoned with both in mundane and extreme situations. No matter whether he’s tossing himself into a street brawl against five local bullies (which inevitably ends with him getting beaten up until Mikasa saves him), if he has to stomach the deaths of his friends and comrades or that he has just somehow turned into the very thing he hates most... Eren tenaciously refuses to yield which allows him to not only remain strong himself but to also inspire others when things count.
*Common Sense:
You can argue that this doesn’t count as special ability but as a lead character Eren has learned to display a lot more than usual of this one, paired with a good portion of humbleness that he learned the hard way. (Like when he had to eat his words about untalented people having no place at the training squad after it turned out that he himself is also no master talent either.) He knows that while all of them are important, neither determination nor talent or the trust in your comrades alone will make miracles happen and has learned how to live and make the best of this.
List the weaknesses your character will gain (or lose) in Soul Campaign: (SPOILERS)
Eren will lose his ability to turn into a titan in SC, which is both a huge loss of abilities for him (no 15m battle machine with crazy regenerative powers at his disposal) and also a bit of a relief since it means that he won’t have to worry about accidentally turning into a titan or worse, losing control while in that state. (Last time that happened he only tried to kill his adoptive sister twice, scarred her face and almost caused the extinction a good half of the last remnants of humanity.) No being able to shift into a titan also means that he’ll keep a prettier face (seriously!) and that he won’t have to worry about its side-effects or having to constantly sleep in the dungeons.
A less pleasant side effect of losing his titan powers is that Eren also won’t be able to use the extreme healing powers that come along with them. Since BREW doesn’t change the way bodies are made up completely Eren won’t lose the ability completely: his body will still keep regenerating everything it otherwise would as well, but it will do so at a much slower rate. He won’t be able to regrow his limbs (not that he’s keen on trying that anyway), but smaller wounds will still heal a touch faster than normal.
[ WEAPON ]
Eren is going to arrive at Death City as a Weapon since he tends to be treated as a living weapon in his canon as well once his ability to turn into a titan is revealed and has accepted this designation himself. While he loves to toss himself recklessly into the fray of the battle it also fits his occupation as a soldier and the legion’s fighting style that’s based on taking down much bigger enemies as a team.
Soul Description:
Reckless, unyielding, driven, violent, optimistic, impulsive, strong.
Eren’s soul appears as a pretty standard soul with hints of his hair and notable blue-green eyes. If one looks closely the shades around its eyes and jaw resemble the characteristic traits of his titan form.
(Weapon Form) / Ability:
Eren’s Weapon form will be 3D maneuver gear that is being used by all the soldier in the series. The Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear includes both parts used for movement as well as attacking that function like this. (Link for the gear in being used.) Rather than normal "Replaceable Hardened Steel" swords it’s sheats will contain blades that are made up of soul energy that can still break and be replaced depending on how good the resonance between Eren and his Meister is as well as their stamina. (Bad resonance - less and more brittle blades.) Same goes for the gas that’s needed to move well with it. Using his Weapon form will also enable Eren to share his knowledge about how to use his Weapon form with his Meister for the time he or she’s using him. (Otherwise they’d probably end up totally tangled and hanging from the next church tower over and over again.) Limitations: At first only the blades of the 3D Maneuver Gear will be usable. After he has gained sufficient experience with his Weapon form the other functions of the gear will become available as well. (10 souls: grappling hooks, 20 souls gas motor for extra speed and mobility)
Unlike real gears Eren’s Weapon form won’t be able to be taken apart.
The special ability of Eren’s Weapon form orients itself on his titan powers - depending on the resonance the 3D Maneuver Gear will become stronger, sharper, faster, more enduring and at a good medium till high range even allow for small bouts of regenerative powers (which will eat up a lot of stamina in return). In extreme cases Eren will be able to “control” his master like he would with his titan form in order to draw the max out of both of them for a short amount of time.
